The Blue Nile originates in Ethiopia and pours out of Lake Tana .The Blue Nile Gorge is one of the most spectacular gorges in the world; bigger than the Grand Canyon in the USA. To reach the Blue Nile Gorge the road passes through green-land plateau and after one hundred Kilometers drive is Debre Libanos Monastery, which dates back to 13th century. 


The Monastery of Debre Libanos, is one of Ethiopia's most holy sites. Saint Tekle Haimanot founded the Monastery in the 13th century and the Saint is credited with the spread of Christianity throughout the central highlands. The present church, the latest in succession of structures, has stained glass windows and mural paintings. Many Ethiopians continue to make a pilgrimage and seek out the area's curative holy water against evil spirits and any health disorders.


The endemic mammal Gelada Baboon and Lammergeyer as well as Rupples Vultures are all habitats of the area. The Portuguese Bridge of the 16th century is also in the vicinity and worth a visit
